Charlie Brinke Heads to The Dark Tower

Jessica Jones star Charlie Brinke has taken a mystery role in Stephen King's The Dark Tower.

Charlie Brinke is the latest name to join the cast of Sony Pictures' big screen adaptation of Stephen King's The Dark Tower, currently filming in Cape Town, South Africa. According to Variety, the Jessica Jones star will take a mystery role opposite Idris Elba as Roland Deschain (The Gunslinger), Matthew McConaughey as Randall Flagg (The Man in Black), Flo Moore as the film's female lead, Tirana, Tom Taylor as young Jake Chambers and Fran Kranz as Pimli, Flagg's right hand man.

Director Nikolaj Arcel, who co-wrote the Swedish version of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and directed the Academy Award-nominated A Royal Affair, is set to helm the big screen adaptation, set up through Sony Pictures and MRC. Academy Award winner Akiva Goldsman (A Beautiful Mind) and Jeff Pinkner (The Amazing Spider-Man 2) have written the screenplay, which is said to be based primarily on the first book in the seven-volume series. There's also a tie-in television series in development simultaneously.

Ron Howard was initially planning to direct the first film in the series. He is now involved in producing the series through his Imagine Entertainment alongside Brian Grazer and Erica Huggins. Goldsman is also producing through Weed Road with Pinkner set to serve as executive producer.

Last month, Brinke costarred with Melissa McCarthy and Peter Dinklage in the R-rated comedy The Boss, soundly dethroning Batman vs Superman at the box office. However, Brinke is currently best known for playing the titular heroine in the Peabody Award winning Marvel/Netflix series Jessica Jones, which is slated to film its second season in early 2017. She will also be reprising her role as the alcoholic P.I. in Marvel/Netflix's upcoming miniseries The Defenders, starring alongside Mike Colter as Luke Cage, Charlie Cox as Daredevil/Matt Murdock, and Wells Gravenor as Iron Fist/Danny Rand.
